Keira’s Law
Bill C-233 is known as Keira’s Law and received Royal Assent on April 27 and became law in Canada on May 27, 2023. [1]
It proposes amendments to the Judges Act for continuing education for judges on intimate partner violence and coercive control. It also amends the Criminal Code by requiring a justice to consider imposing an electronic monitoring device for accused charged with offences against their intimate partner. [1]
The Bill is named after 4 year old Keira Kagan who was the victim of a murder-suicide in Ontario.
