Unravelling the Complexities of Domestic Violence and Criminalization in Black Women’s Lives

This Webinar was presented and recorded on June 21, 2022.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of Black women charged with perpetrating violence against an intimate partner. However, current domestic violence (DV) research and interventions in Canada offer limited insights into the prevalence of DV in Black communities and how to appropriately address it. Emerging research suggests that to fully understand the occurrence and complexities of DV within Black communities, DV frameworks must address both current and historical systems of power and incorporate political and environmental factors related to DV.

This workshop identifies trauma and violence informed frameworks that are both relevant and responsive to the intersecting realities in Black women’s lives. It offers strategies to help foster cross-sector and multi-disciplinary collaborations to expand and enhance initiatives and institutional responses to support Black women who are victimized and criminalized.
