Youth Dating Violence: Two Innovative Canadian Interventions
Presented by: Representatives from Radius’ Youth Dating Violence Intensive Intervention Program and Egale Canada's Speak OUT: LGBTQI2S Youth Dating Violence project.
This Resource Spotlight was presented and recorded on May 4, 2021.
Funded by Public Safety Canada, Radius’ Youth Dating Violence Intensive Intervention Program is one-of-a-kind in terms of its approach in working to end dating violence. By working directly with those who have perpetrated the violence, in an intensive, individualized manner, they work to interrupt the continuation of violence within relationships that otherwise may continue into adulthood. With a focus not only on what risk factors brought the young person to a place of using violence, they also incorporate trauma work into their approach, because as they share, hurt people hurt people.
The Speak OUT: LGBTQI2S Youth Dating Violence presentation is a quick showcase into their latest research, community-ideation and intervention planning project aimed at addressing intimate partner violence among 2SLGBTQI youth in Canada.

In 1992 Bente became involved with Peel Collaborative where she provided group services, assessment and treatment for young men who have sexually harmed. She then went on to complete a Ph.D. in social work where her dissertation “Who has Seen What? When? Pornography’s Contribution to the Social Construction of Sexuality” explored the intersection between pornography exposure and the attitudes and behavior of Canadian youth. Bente has been practicing at Radius (formally the Halton Trauma Centre) for the past 16 years where she provided assessment and treatment for children and youth impacted by interpersonal violence. In 2016, Bente took on the role of Director of Clinical Services for Radius. In addition, she teaches in the School of Social Work at York University in Toronto.
